“John Crabbie was a true pioneer in the Scottish whisky industry. One of the oldest names in Scotch whisky with the business being founded in 1801 in Edinburgh. From the middle of the 19th century John Crabbie blended his own range of whiskies.
In addition to procuring large stocks of Scottish single malt whisky from some of the finest distilleries, he signed licences to produce his own whiskies at distilleries such as Balmanech and Benrinnes.
John Crabbie collaborated with Andrew Usher and William Sanderson to pioneer the ‘art’ of whisky blending and together they created North British distillery, where Crabbie was the founding Vice Chairman in 1885
Records show that Crabbie whisky was housed at Yardheads in Leith and this became the home of the original Crabbie distillery
In 2017 Halewood International acquired a site in Leith, close to the original John Crabbie location for a new whisky distillery. In Dec 2019 the new Bonnington Distillery was completed and became operational
